Call to Action: “NO” to new MN Health Insurance bill that mimics ACHA at state-level.

A bill we thought was dead seems to be back on the table and the MN Republicans are trying to gauge local reaction to it, before possibly introducing the bill next session. This state-level bill contains provisions that mimic provisions in the national level ACHA Healthcare bill. It’s critical that we let the legislators know that Minnesota opposes this bill!

Here are the details of what this bill allows health insurance companies to do:

1) restrict coverage for pre-existing conditions as long as the restriction happens when the policy is issued and the person purchasing insurance is told about it. The pre-existing condition constraints last up to 12 months for any condition treated in the 6 months prior to applying for the insurance plan, if the applicant has not maintained continuous coverage.

2) vary premiums based on health status and lifestyle factors by up to 10% more or 50% less than the standard rate.

3) cancel a policy 30 days after a missed payment. Any claims made during those 30 days do not have to be paid. Basically, if you miss a single payment they can cancel your insurance.

4) If you make claims against your health insurance, that can be used to determine your rate when you renew. So, using your insurance could make your insurance more expensive.

Call the committee leadership and tell them you oppose SF1153. This erosion of the ACA is not what Minnesota wants!
