Make your voice heard on Women’s Equality Day—Aug. 26

This Saturday is Women’s Equality Day—a day to commemorate the passing of the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote. Yet, while we celebrate that landmark, women in the U.S. still don’t have equal rights.

Join Women’s March Minnesota Saturday, Aug. 26 to make our voices heard and create change on Women’s Equality Day. Share your stories and selfies on Twitter and Facebook with #WomensEqualityDay and #EqualMeansEqual.

That’s not all! There are two awesome local opportunities to educate and inform about the Equal Rights Amendment.

Volunteer at the State Fair with MN NOW! Hand out leaflets to educate others about the need for the Equal Rights Amendment. Meet at the northeast corner of Snelling and Midway Parkway, across the street from the main entrance to the State Fair. Shifts are 9 a.m. – noon, noon – 3 p.m. and 3-6 p.m. For more information or to sign up for a shift, contact Gordy Gustafson at gcgustafson@msn.com.

Join ERAMN and other top women’s advocacy groups for a screening of “Equal Means Equal” produced by Kamala Lopez and Patricia Arquette. The screening is at 7 p.m. at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. RSVP or get more information

The award-winning documentary sheds light on current laws and their inadequacies, while arguing for the ratification of the ERA, which would provide constitutional protection against discrimination on the basis of gender. It would also strengthen legal action against pay inequity, domestic and sexual violence, pregnancy discrimination, and laws that unjustly discriminate against women.

While we celebrate those brave women who took those first steps to equality Saturday, we must continue to keep fighting. It’s been 94 years since the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was introduced, calling for true equality that “shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.”

This Women’s Equality Day, learn how the ERA is more relevant today than ever before.
