Support the Postal Service

One of the many reasons to support the United States Postal Service now is that we need a safe alternative to in-person voting in the upcoming 2020 elections - voting by mail! For background on what’s happening, read this Atlantic article.

It is alarming that during a time when we are increasingly dependent upon the mail for basic necessities that the GOP is holding relief funding for the postal service hostage until they increase their package rates. A move that would make it even more difficult for the U.S. Postal Service to realize its mission of delivering mail to remote areas of the country every day.

Here are some actions you can take to help the USPS, from our friends at Common Cause MN:

  1. Write to:

Ask them to support the modification of H.R.6379 - Take Responsibility for Workers and Families Act  - to include emergency funding for the U.S. Postal Service.

Here are some more talking points:

  • keep the nearly 500,000 postal workers employed (including a significant number of veterans)

  • make sure rural areas continue to have access to mail

  • ensure that the estimated 1 million lifesaving medications that are shipped every year get to people

  • make sure all of our military personnel have continued service (private services like UPS and FedEx cannot deliver for security reasons)

  • it would be irresponsible to let the Post Office fail as it would disrupt both the Census and the November 2020 election

  • everyone, no matter where they live, should get the same access to communication

2. Buy stamps

3. RESISTBOT OPTION - Text USPS to 50409 to send an electronic message to your representatives

4. Sign the Common Cause petition
