This week, we lost a true force and pioneer for gay rights, Edie Windsor, who passed away Sept. 12, 2017. We remember her legacy and look to continue the work she started. May she #RestInPower.

Healthcare

In the wake of another attempt to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, stay educated about what bills are being proposed and how they affect you. Contact your representatives and let them know how you feel.

• Sen. Al Franken signed Sen. Bernie Sanders bill, “Medicare for All” last week, underscoring that healthcare is a fundamental right.
• Here’s a summary of the Graham-Cassidy bill that is still being discussed and amended. We’ll do our best to keep you informed on how it changes and progresses through Congress. Do you have family and friends living in a state with Republican US Senators? Urge them to contact their representatives. Or, help make phone calls to your peer voters in key states to ask them contact their representatives.

On Sports

Sports and the White House collided in recent weeks.

First, Jemele Hill spoke out on Twitter, calling Trump a white supremacist. The White House then called for ESPN to fire her. We stand with Jemele and all black women whose livelihoods are threatened for speaking the truth. Sign and share this petition telling ESPN you support the rights of Jemele Hill and Black journalists everywhere.

Both Jemele Hill and Margana Wood spoke truth to power, with very different responses. We wonder why?

On Friday, Sept. 22, Trump spoke at a campaign rally about the NFL and the continued, peaceful protests more and more NFL players are making against racism each Sunday. His rhetoric was racist and completely out of line. We continue to knee in solidarity with athletes like Colin Kaepernick and so many others that are speaking out on injustices in our society. Support them and #TakeTheKnee

Lena Waithe makes herstory

Lena Waithe became the first black woman to win an Emmy for comedy writing. In her speech she notes “the things that make us different — those are our superpowers.” We couldn’t have said it better.

Opportunities to Show Up

Tuesday, Sept. 26 – Immigration and the Making of Saint Paul: A Six Week Course East Side Freedom Library and St. Paul Public Schools Community Education invite you to a six-week course, "Immigration & the Making of Saint Paul," which will explore the role of immigrants in the making and remaking of Saint Paul. We will cover the 1840s through current times.

Wednesday Sep. 27 – Forums on Improving Minnesota Waters, Marine-on-St. Croix and Minneapolis. A series of public meetings across Minnesota is seeking citizen input on an ambitious goal: improving the state’s lakes, rivers, streams, and groundwater by 25 percent in the next eight years.

Wednesday, Sept. 27 – Charlas with WANDA MN: Economic Justice Grab a brew and learn more about what eliminating economic disparity looks like in Minnesota, especially in its rural communities. And bring lots of questions!

Sept. 27 – Oct 1 – Twin Cities Arab Film Festival Mizna proudly presents the 12th Twin Cities Arab Film Festival, September 27 to October 1—a chance to see thoughtfully curated films from Arab and Arab American filmmakers.

Thursday, Sept. 28 – Third Thursdays: Standing with Refugees & Immigrants in MN in the age of Trump Join Women's March Minnesota and the Minnesota Resistance Coalition Thursday, Sept. 28, 6-8 p.m. at Black Dog Cafe for an in-depth panel discussion on refugee resettlement and immigration issues under the current administration.

Friday, Sept. 29 – Navigate MN: 2017 Minnesotanxs Gala and Awards Join Navigate MN for a powerful evening of recognizing leaders in our community and fostering our network of engaged power builders and allies committed to immigration justice and education equity.

Tuesday, Oct. 3 – Hennepin County Hearing on Body Cameras – Round Two Hennepin County commissioners got an earful from the community at the public hearing September 12 and figured out that Sheriff Stanek was not being straight with them about the way these devices are going to be used.

Wednesday, Oct. 4 – Voter Suppression – Democracy, Discussion & Drinks Join LWVSP for an informal presentation on various voter suppression tactics such as Voter ID laws, limited polling hours, voter roll purges and provisional ballots.

Sunday, Oct. 7 – Run Like a Girl 5K Join MSP NOW and The Progressive North for the Run Like a Girl race, where we'll raise money for WomenWinning, a Minnesota-based organization that encourages, promotes, supports, and elects pro-choice women of all political parties to all levels of public office.

Tuesday, Oct. 10 – NARAL Pro-Choice MN, Power of Choice – a Gala and Silent Auction Join NARAL Pro-Choice MN for their annual Power of Choice celebration, featuring special guest and keynote speaker Lindy West!
