March For Our Lives - an update

20,000-strong participate in March for our Lives at Saint Paul

Hundreds of thousands of students from across the country participated in a march for their lives on March 24. In Saint Paul they took to the streets 20,000 strong in order to have their voices heard on gun control.

The event, lead by Students Demand Action, with support from organizations like Protect MN, Mom’s Demand Action, Students Demand Action, and Women’s March Minnesota, featured several local student speakers and a few surprise guests from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who were in town for a national hockey tournament.

During the event students called for changes to the gun law including:

  • Banning assault weapons commonly used in school shootings
  • In-depth background checks with any gun purchase
  • Raising the gun-purchasing age to 21
  • Not arming teachers

Several of the speakers during the program called attention to and recognized the warriors that have been in this fight for far longer than they have when it comes to the impact gun violence has had on black and brown communities throughout history.

Other speakers, including Republican legislators, noted the fact that those in power aren’t taking action to even let these ideas be heard on the floor of the Minnesota Legislature. Calls of ‘Vote them out’ were regularly heard throughout the day. Students called for parents and allies to be their voice at the ballot box, to show up and speak with their legislators, and hold them accountable for their inaction. They also encouraged peers who are able to vote in November to get registered and get to the polls.
